The Montessori Teacher

The teacher prepares the environment, selecting equipment, organising the classroom to suit the children in her care.

Her primary function in the classroom is that of an observer. She is constantly increasing her store of information about each child so that she can become an adequate guide for him, especially in helping him take full advantage of the freedom offered by the prepared environment.

She demonstrates to the child, frequently on an individual basis, the uses of the material which she considers, through her observation, to be appropriate to his level of development, which he is then free to use with the minimum of teacher help.
